Despite Discouragement

Prabhupada Books

I was going door to door in Hamilton’s poorest area (ruff looking state houses) when I saw a young man dressed like a hoodlum on a BMX. I stopped him and said, “Hey! Are you a rapper or break-dancer?”

He stopped and managed to give me $2 and take a 'Raja-Vidya.' I found out that he lived up the driveway where I would go after the house I was about to approach. So I told him to tell his mates and brother I will be coming up soon. He tried to discourage me by saying they won’t be interested and probably won’t even come to the door. I told him to never mind that and just tell them a monk is coming.

At the next house a lady came to the door and looked very disturbed (manda-bhagya hy upadrutah). She asked me to leave her property. So I then approached the door of the house where I was told that no one would be interested. But I was invited in, met a nice young man sitting on the couch and to my surprise he gave $20 and took a Bhagavad-gita. Wow! Never let anyone discourage you (including our own mind) from approaching anyone and everyone. I will be the first to admit it is easier said than done.

Your servant,
Damodara Krsna Dasa
