ISKCON Preaching

For years I worked as a full time regular pioneer for the Jehovahs Witnesses (house to house ministry) one of the best and most successful groups in this type of preaching.

One thing I note in ISKCON is the big pat on the back we give ourselves on book distribution (the book scores tell us so); however we are poor on follow up; this is the biggest failing.

This is partly down to the fact that most books are distributed on the street with little regard for follow up, not even a leaflet carefully placed in the book with an upcoming event or centre details. This in my own view would be helpful.

Why did I first go to the temple for the first time? Simply because of a small piece of card with an invite given with the book.

Attention to details like this should be considered.

As witnesses we took a small note of the persons name and details of points raised or discussed; including facts of family and friends etc. This personal interest makes a good basis for long term progress.

Then we could ask what are a person’s strengths and skills? Can they be engaged in service? This is vital and again something often overlooked; the devotees who introduced me to KC were very skillful in this, it made me feel wanted and a part of ISKCON.

Finally, one closing point, there was within the witnesses no counting of individual book scores. Yes, the local congregation kept records, but high book scores were not focused on. What was the focus is that those preachers helped bring people into the faith.

ISKCON has more to offer, but could learn from other faiths in practical application of preaching skills
