Another life saved from distributing books

I was distributing books in Mexico. It was a very difficult day. Everyone was saying no, all day, and I had many books in my bag. It felt heavier as the day went on. Then I saw a young lady, and I was thinking of not approaching her because I had already received so much rejection. But I thought, “What’s one more rejection?” I approached her and offered her the Bhagavad gita. She didn’t say anything. Then I started telling her that the book tells about the soul and about God and how to have a loving relationship. She opened up to...

Appreciation is an encouraging motivator

Last week I stopped a guy outside the Warehouse in Hamilton, CBD. His name is Kedan, and he studies at WINTEC (Waikato Institute of Technology). I showed him “Hiding In Unnatural Happiness”. Taking the book, he flipped through it. As I talked about the book, he asked, “Does this have anything to do with Hare Krishna and the guys playing music on the streets? Because if it does, I’d be interested. That looks like real fun.” Surprised by the question, I explained that this is true. He gave a donation and took both...

In Wellington, recently, there have been some frightening looking billboards for a new “mocumentary” comedy television series, called Wellington Paranormal, wherein police hunt ghosts, werewolves, and paranormal phenomena. This made me recall a sunlit evening on the corner of Cuba and Ghuznee, in Wellington, during the December marathon. As the evening went on,...

Encountering the Police Chief

The first time I ever went out on door-to-door book distribution, I knocked on the door of a beautiful home. The man who answered was the chief of police, and he told me in no uncertain terms that what I was doing was illegal business activity. He said he was going to book me and that I had to appear in the police station the next morning. I was thinking that my government job was going to be finished. Krishna gave me the intelligence to tell him that I was not doing business. I told him to go through the books and see for himself that...

Book distribution prevents misfortune

At one opulent home in London, I rang the doorbell, and in response from within came a tirade of foul language – yelling at me to go away. I did not. I kept ringing the bell. I don’t know why, but I felt that I could convince this person to take a book. Finally, a distraught and furious young man opened the door and shouted at me “Why are you bothering me? I told you to go away! Who are you anyway?” I told him, “I am from the Hare Krishna temple.” As soon as he heard “Hare Krishna” his fury...
