Saved in Ukraine

I’m in the holy dhama of Mayapur. As I got ready to take rest last night, I heard a kirtan not far away. It was my neighbor, Niranjana Swami, and some devotees having a bhajana. Niranjana Maharaja is one of my favorite kirtaniyas, so I went over to hear the nectar of the holy names. After he had chanted a while, he saw me and said that he had a sankirtan story to tell me. In Ukraine, there are devotees cooking for the Food for Life program. They cook at the bottom of an empty swimming pool, because it’s safer down there. After...

A humble scholar asks his taxi driver to narrate and sign the Gita

For about ten years, I maintained myself and my family by driving a taxi. Srila Prabhupada’s kirtan always softly played in the taxi, and I was distributing his books to my passengers. Some happily accepted, and some refused as always. One day, I picked up a passenger from the airport to take him downtown, about a forty-minute drive with traffic. On the way, he recognized the maha-mantra in the background and started a conversation with me. I slowly introduced him to the message of the Bhagavad Gita. He started listening to my narrations very...

Determined people

I was on Cuba Street in Wellington when I tried to stop an Asian lady and her teenage daughter. Upon starting a conversation with me, she said that she is Buddhist, and I glorified her for that and presented a Gita. She very favorably listened. Her daughter looked skeptical, as if perhaps her mother was being scammed. She interrupted and said, “Mum, I don’t think we need this book. Let’s go, please.” I was a bit thrown off and unsure what to say, but her mum said, “I think we should get this book, sweety.”...

My Prabhupada marathon in Romania and Timisoara

My Prabhupada marathon in Romania and Timisoara

For the 2022 Srila Prabhupada Marathon, I knew that I did not have a strong commitment or enough time to go out in Sankirtan (due to high load at work) like I did in 2020, for example. Also, I knew I did not want to disappoint Srila Prabhupada, Sri Sri Gaura Nitay, my spiritual master (Srila Sivarama Maharaj) and all my siksa-gurus with poor results. In the Romania Yatra we have much more dedicated and competent Sankirtan devotees than I can ever aspire to be. Being stimulated by friendly competition, and being driven by the inferior mode of...

The potency of Srila Prabhupada’s books

Six years ago, a beautiful couple visited my Ayurvedic clinic. They looked very decent. The husband told me, “My wife is pregnant, but we want to abort the child.” I strictly denied them the abortion, as my husband and I don’t help any patient with the medical termination of pregnancy. I pacified them. Then I insisted that she carry the pregnancy. As the husband was our regular patient, he respected our advice. Two weeks later, the couple came again. They told me, “Ma’am, we want this child.” I was happy and thanked Krishna...

Krsna made a man feel that he should buy some sets

I was milking the cows in the afternoon, and an Indian family came into the goshalla. We had a talk as I was finishing the milking, and then I engaged them in bottle-feeding the calf Nishta. Afterward I offered to show them some books. The head of the family agreed to take a whole stack and gave a nice donation. I also mentioned that I had full sets of the Bhagavatam and Caitanya-caritamrta at home and encouraged him to consider taking a look at them. The gent replied that he had already spent a lot of money driving up to the farm from Sydney...

My first distribution of a set of Bhagavatam

My first distribution of a set of Bhagavatam

During this year’s book marathon in Durban, I met many people who had a change of heart. Not heart transplantations but a transformation of consciousness. A Christian lady whom I spoke with was going through difficulties. I told her about the Fifth Canto and what happens after one is involved in the four sinful activities. I gave her details, such as how eating meat puts you on a hellish planet, where in a pot of boiling oil, you are boiled alive. She became interested and took a Bhagavatam set. That was my first attempt at distributing...
