Young girl reading the Gita gets the First Canto

Young girlI was distributing books at the farmers market a block away from the temple in Los Angeles. The books were going out, but I had some other service to do, still I wanted to distribute one more book.

After looking for a while for that special soul that would get one of Srila Prabhupada’s books, I was approached by a little girl who asked, “How much do you want for your books?”

I said, “We just ask for a donation.”

She disappeared into the croud and came back a few minutes later with her mother saying, “This is the man with the books, and he said he is just asking for a donation for them.”

I said to the mother, “You have a special daughter. She’s interested in spiritual books.”

The mother said, “She sure is. She reads the Bhagavad-gita every day.”

I couldn’t believe my ears — just a seven or eight-year-old.

The mother asked her daughter, “Would you like to have one of the books?"

“Yes, please, get one for me.”

I asked her which one she wanted: Journey of Self Discovery, Science of Self Realization or the Srimad Bhagavatam First Canto, Part One.

She said, “I want the Srimad Bhagavatam.”

Perhaps she remembered reading about it in the Bhagavad-gita.

Then she asked her mother to give me a donation. Her mother gave me a quarter. I was a little surprised. Then the daughter said, “Mom! He’s giving us a book, and you’re just going to give him a quarter? Then she went into her little purse and pulled out $2 and gave it to me.” I thanked them both and again told the mother how fortunate she is to have such a special daughter.

Your servant,
Bhakta Vatsal Dasa
