Forty years ago, I was visiting the Montreal temple.
I spoke to an old gentleman: "We are Hare Krishna devotees distributing literature."
The man's facial features suddenly changed, and he said, "I was visiting the Montreal temple forty years ago. Thank you for telling me about this sweet chanting, I can still recall."
He said his name was Jake and promised to join us in the Toronto temple, and he bought a book. As he was giving a donation his hands were shakening.
I thought: "Krishna! If he spent all those forty years for nothing, please engage him in devotional service. May Srila Prabhupada bless him again through his books!"
Then I talked to a funny man whose whole bod was tattooed. He'd gotten out of jail only an hour earlier. Besides not having laces in his shoes, he was chaotically looking at dirty papers.
But he looked very happy.
I said to him, "Sir, you look so happy that I can only guess what happened to you. On this street you look much happier than all these people around us. It s remarkable!"
The man was touched. I could see that. And finally, I just needed to add something, to envoke his interest or even faith, to persuade him to buy a book.
I said, "Yoga, which is so nicely discribed in this book, will award you liberation. It s exactly like getting out of a prison. But it's even more fun, because you get unlimited freedom!"
The man was deeply touched and bought a book, Jaya Srila Prabhupada!
