Early Days on Sankirtan

When I first tried to sell straight books I was horrible at it. I did not know what to say and I did not even believe the sound of my own words! I was a new devotee. I was only trying because I had some push from the temple authorities. I certainly liked Bhagavad-Gita but I could not preach. After so many bad days I finally cracked and just sat down on a seat in the airport and cried my eyes out. There was a service man near by and he stopped and said, "What's the matter, Mam, can I help?" I mumbled to him that I was supposed to...

From Fear to Ecstacy

Dear Prabhu's We begin the New Year by offering a wonderful nectar story from the recently concluded December book distribution marathon. The entire month saw the Radha-Gopinath congregation and resident devotees immersing themselves completely in the fire of the sankirtana yajna, resulting in a score that was heretofore unseen in the history of the temple. We begin with the story of Bhakta Ashish, who comes for His Grace Shikshashtakam Prabhu's Wednesday meeting in the temple. He recalls: Before the beginning of the marathon, I was...

KGB Speaks Out Against Book Distribution

Posted by on 5:45 am in Sankirtan Stories | Comments Off on KGB Speaks Out Against Book Distribution

By Karma-jna Das Once I had a discussion with one of my friends. He was a son of a highly placed KGB man. His father was a captain for a boat that was ‘exporting goods’. Actually they were transporting weapons. My friend’s father was involved in bringing weapons to Vietnam and also participated in the conflicts in Egypt and in Greece. So we were discussing once about religious movements. My friend said his father embarked on one occasion at some Western harbor. He went to visit the Soviet embassy near the harbor to do some...

Sastra Dana program in Czech Republic

By Acyuta Gotra das In June 2006 all congregation devotees in Czech Republic got an opportunity to take part in distributing BBT books. We were inspired by already running Sastra Dana program for distribution of sponsored literature in Los Angeles and San Diego. During several months of 2006 it distributed almost 400 books and in 2007 already 1006 books (444 Maha Big, 461 Big, 101 Medium), mainly to public libraries and libraries in basic schools, high schools and universities. Many congregation devotees gradually took part. Some give...

December Marathon

At Terminal 7 at Los Angeles Airport, I met a nice-looking black girl from Nairobi who lives in LA. She was crying when I tried to present the books, and she just said, "Please wait a little" and continued to sit there and cry. Then she showed me an invitation card, to let me know that someone else already approached her. She also said something like "I know about Krishna". I asked her, "Can I help you? why are you crying?" She said, "No one would take care of the children. My mother doesn't understand...

Sankirtana Nectar

1) Sankirtana Nectar in the Army Mitravinda devi dasi After months of healing in the physical therapy unit, several of us were sent back down to Basic Combat Training to finish the requirements of graduation. I remember training from the first time around and decided I would have no time for preaching. There is no storage for Srila Prabhupada's books in the barracks. The books would be too heavy for me to carry along with all my army-issued supplies. Only my one Bhagavad Gita and Japa beads would be packed. That was a huge mistake! A good...

Finland

Our Humble Obeisances! Jaya Srila Prabhupada! Last week our group was in Turku. We had a free apartment in the city centre. Since doing sankirtan in Finland usually means lot of driving, I got the opportunity to take a holiday from that and went to the walking street of Turku every day. It is technically quite an ideal place for distribution, enough people but not too rushed, nobody complains about us, lot of students and young people also. The only disturbance is some street musicians, Romanian folk-songs, a local boy playing Led Zeppelin...

A Few Incidents During The Prabhupada Marathon

By Vijaya dasa A Surprise I approached a couple of middle-aged men and presented the Bhagavad-Gita to them. Immediately one of them said, “Cool, I’m into this.” As I showed him the book, I handed a Gita to the other man, who said, “I don’t think so,” and gave it back. Then I started showing both of them the illustrations. After my presentation, I handed a book to the one who was interested, but to my surprise he said, “You know, I probably won’t get around to reading it.” But to my bigger...
