OUR VICTORIOUS HARINAMA

Our New Dwaraka Harinama party has become more adventurous. We are on the pavement on big mats in downtown Culver City with harmonium and karatals in a new upscale amusement and shopping plaza. Just last night our three-year- old participant, Caitanya, gave pamphlets to two young boys. They were amused but their father said to give the pamphlets back. The older boy insisted they were going to keep them. The father looked frustrated. Their mother was scowling at our kirtan party. She grabbed one of the pamphlets from her sons and looked...

A pleasnat surprise and then another one

In Napier this past December, I was remembering Olli; a young man we had come across here a couple years ago during the same Srila Prabhupada marathon. At that time, he purchased a Srimad-Bhagavatam set from my then sankirtan partner (Yashodara) on the main street and spent a few evenings with us discussing KC, taking prasad and appreciating the treasure of Krsna Bhakti. We had originally met a couple years prior to that when he spent a few weeks living with us in the “wwoofing” program at the Wellington Bhakti Lounge just...

THIS IS PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE!

THIS IS PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE!

I was distributing Bhagavad Gitas to motels in Whangarei. I entered one reception and there was a smart looking Chinese lady behind the counter. I showed her the Bhagavad Gita and told her we were showing them to all the hotels and motels in the area. She was very interested and said she wanted to know more about the book, so I opened the Gita and showed her the picture of the soul changing bodies. She followed her finger along the changing bodies, and then it got to the end where the person is old and the soul then goes into another body....

Bhagavad-gita as it isn’t

Bhagavad-gita as it isn’t

I’m visiting the relatively new Rohini temple in New Delhi, and I asked Sukha Priya Dasa, the temple commander, how he joined. While in college, he had to write a paper on the Bhagavad-gita. So he read two versions — by Dr Radhakrishnan and Gandhi – and because of reading them, he became an atheist. Then he started working in France and Germany as an engineer. He met another worker who followed the “Bhagavad-gita As It Is,” and they would have conversations about the Gita. He would always be defeated by the...

Every book has a name on it

Contnued from New Zealand… In Matamata I approached a sweet young Maori dad. As soon as he saw the stack he recognized Bhagavad Gita. He was amazed because just last week he saw the Gita on a coffee table at his partner’s sister’s house, read a bit from the back, and found it fascinating. He said he had never come across wisdom like that before and wanted to know more, so a week later he was glad to see the Gita again plus so many more books  Paramatama in action. I was thinking how perhaps his partner’s sister had...

GRATEFUL TO BE AN INSTRUMENT

GRATEFUL TO BE AN INSTRUMENT

Dear glorious marathon soul-diers, preaching in the trenches of Kali-yuga for Lord Caitanya’s pleasure, Please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! I was asked to send a few nectar bites from this marathon, so here are a few stories about how we are all playing a part in bringing others closer to Krsna, since we may not see the result of our efforts at the time. I was inspired by a class by HG Bhrgupati Prabhu. He was sharing how he used to do sankirtana in NZ and named towns like Tauranga, Rotorua and...

ESTHER THE INVESTOR

ESTHER THE INVESTOR

Eighty-year-old Esther invested in an entire spiritual library for her family. After she bought a $50 stack, a variety of Prabhupada’s books, she went inside the warehouse, came back out and asked for another $50 stack, to give to her family as a present. I had a better present in mind. I introduced her to the Srimad-Bhagavatam set, which she fell in love with and decided to get that for her family instead. Esther was so impressed with the books and the knowledge they offer. She’s a real seeker who recently lost her husband and...

SURPRISE MERCY

SURPRISE MERCY

It was early in the day, not long after I’d begun my efforts on Auckland’s Queen Street. The street was buzzing with the usual morning energy when I spotted a man with long hair, dressed in pink pants and a matching scarf. He had a carefree, almost ethereal aura—a modern-day hippie, I thought. Unsure of his background, I approached him anyway. We struck up a conversation, and he introduced himself as Manu. “Manu?” I responded, a little surprised. “That name is mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita.” I held out the...
