Even a Butcher Can Take Part
Recently, I tried to distribute Prabhupada's books in the villages in Slovakia. Last week I went door to door and entered a butcher's shop. A woman saw me in Vaishnava clothes, with books in my hand, and she immediately said, "I do not want any books. Some salesman was here last week." I told her that I am not a salesman, but a monk. I showed her books, but she was not at all interested. Then I told her, "Madam, it is very important for you to take these books." "Why?" she asked. "You know, you have...

“It is so much encouraging to hear how you are introducing this Krsna consciousness movement in the schools and colleges there. Especially this is an ideal opportunity for distributing our books also, so you should make all serious endeavors in this connection. These books are so potent that anyone who reads them is sure to become Krsna conscious. So it is a very valuable service to distribute our...

Today on sankirtana, on three occasions, students came to my table and looked at the Bhagavad-Gita and flatly interrupted me while I was trying to show it to someone else, saying, "I want this. How much is it?" This has happened before, but three times in one day is a charm. The kids I talk to nowadays are concerned about global warming and terrorism. They do not have the same assurance of the somewhat predictable world that we grew up in. College hatha-yoga classes are offered, always with a strong emphasis on relief from stress. I...

“Thank you for sending the book reviews. They are very encouraging to me. As much as possible, we want our books to be accepted by all learned circles of men. Regarding sending books freely to any library. The system that you can adopt is to send the books and tell them to read them over for one week's time. If they do not like the book, they should send it back at our cost. If they like it and want it, then they can send the amount of money to us (whatever the book sells for). But, we cannot give books away free to anyone. They...

One Saturday I went door to door in Hamilton, NZ. After a stretch of houses, I could hear someone playing a guitar in the next driveway on the other side of a hedge. As I came around the corner I recognised Regan, a guy who studies law and once came to the Krishna House. He had a drum with him, so we tried to jam and chant Hare Krsna to a famous "Nirvana" riff. Befitting the band's name, it was a nice beginning to my spiritual journey that day. Further up the road, I could hear some really loud bass and lots of shouting. I...

By Sivarama Swami Just after loading my bookbag with (20) maha books I tapped a man on the arm and looked him in the eye. He stopped, expecting me to say something. I didn’t. I put a book in his hand, pointed at Prabhupada’s picture, to the Sanskrit inside and then up to the sky indicating the books are meant to elevate you. I remember being absorbed in the desire to give out books and after looking deep into his eyes again, I slapped my pocket indicating he should give a donation. He did. He was a young businessman, obviously...

“I am especially encouraged by your increasing the distribution of books. That is our primary business, to sell these transcendental literatures profusely all over the world. And your methods which you have introduced for distributing the books are very much liked by me and approved fully. Whatever we have to do to induce people to take a book, that is nice. We shall judge the thing by its result, not by its means. But at the same time, we must avoid irritating anyone or disappointing anyone later by cheating them or telling big lies...
