My first BTG

Book tables inspire people in Hong Kong

I had just finished Methodist Christian Elementary School, and I was more than ready to try to fit in at a non-religious Middle School.

At the dentist there was a BTG magazine in the waiting room. When I saw the picture of Chaitanya in the upper left corner with his hands raised and all of the people joyfully responding to Him, I was struck with guilt for having left Jesus behind in the elementary school. At the same time I was in awe at how Caitanya Mahaprabhu looked more beautiful to me than Jesus did.

Then quickly envy took over when I saw that it was not a Christian magazine at all, and I decided that the authors must have copied a picture of Jesus in order to make their version look wonderful. However I still could not explain why He distinctly looked much more blissful than any picture of Jesus.

That mysterious picture never went out of my mind until I met devotees again ten years later. I always remembered the intriguing lines, “Godhead is light, nescience is darkness, where there is Godhead there is no nescience”, along with the beautiful painting of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with his arms raised to the conditioned souls.
