Krsna works in wonderful ways

Distributing Books in Trains

Preaching in South Gujarat

by Guru Dasa

We are a small group of brahmacaris distributing books in South Gujarat. We've had several interesting incidents while on sankirtana.

We often distribute books on a moving train. Many of the conductors know us due to our famous temple in Juhu, Mumbai. Normally they don't give us any trouble. But one day they did. Two of our brahmacaris were distributing books on a train going to Mumbai. A conductor approached them for their tickets and asked them to stop distributing. So for some time they stopped. But after going down a few compartments they started distributing again. The same conductor suddenly appeared and became a little angry; he wanted to charge the devotees some money as a punishment. An argument began, and in the meantime another, very tall conductor arrived on the scene, angrily slapped one of our brahmacaris, and started to berate the two of them. In the meantime a gentleman passenger approached the group and explained that the brahmacaris were not doing business but were doing the very good work of distributing the knowledge of the Bhagavad-gita, and that they were from a very reputable organization. After hearing this gentleman, the tall conductor cooled down and purchased three maha-big books, and he told his fellow conductor to also buy some books. He promptly purchased two maha-big books.

On another day the same two brahmacaris met a man on the railroad platform in Valsad who told them he had been worshiping Lord Shiva since childhood. But he had purchased "A Second Chance" five years earlier, and by reading that book he became convinced that Lord Krsna was Supreme. Since then, he told them, he had been chanting the name of Lord Krsna regularly and had become His worshiper.

Once I was distributing books on a train going to Surat. A bearded Muslim man dressed in white expressed an interest in what I was doing. So I gave him the Bhagavad-gita in Hindi. He looked at it, opened it, read it for some time, and then returned it to me. So I continued distributing. After some time the person seated next to the Muslim man got up, approached me, and told me that he knew of the good work that ISKCON was doing. So he purchased the Hindi Bhagavad-gita and gave it to the Muslim man as a gift.
